Washable duvets: where the difference in quality is

Washable duvets without a cover have become popular in a short time. The idea is simple. You sleep directly under the duvet and then put the whole thing in the washing machine.

But that means we use a duvet very differently than before.
Washable duvets without a cover have become popular in a short time. The idea is simple. You sleep directly under the duvet and then put the whole thing in the washing machine.

But that means we use a duvet very differently than before.

A traditional duvet usually lies under a separate duvet cover. That cover is washed regularly. The duvet itself much less often.

With a washable duvet without a cover, the whole duvet goes into the washing machine regularly. That asks more of the fabric, the filling and above all of the construction.

The traditional quilted construction

The familiar squares in a duvet are there for a reason. The outer fabric is stitched through in several places to keep the filling neatly in place.

For a traditional duvet that is a logical construction. The duvet usually sits in a cover and is only washed now and then.

On many washable duvets we see the same quilted construction. Only now the duvet is washed much more often.

Washing asks more of a duvet

A quilted duvet can go in the washing machine just fine. During washing it gets heavy and moves a lot. Especially during the spin cycle, a lot of force sits on the stitched seams.

With regular washing those seams can become a weak point. Thread can break or come loose, and the fabric around a stitch can eventually tear.

Materials also react differently to washing and drying. Cotton can shrink, for example, while a synthetic filling behaves differently.

For a duvet that is washed now and then, that does not have to be a problem. A washable duvet that is meant to be washed often, as a whole, sets different requirements for the construction.

Developed for regular washing

When Plumelle was developed, regular washing was central from the start. That is why we developed a new patented construction without visible stitches. The duvet can be washed as a whole at 60°C.

The idea behind it is simple. If you want to wash a duvet regularly, not only the fabric has to be suitable for that. The way the duvet is built has to fit that too.

In short

Not every washable duvet is made in the same way. So do not look only at the fabric or at the temperature on the care label. The construction matters too.

A traditional quilted duvet can be washed just fine. If you want to wash a duvet often, as a whole, the seams are simply put under strain much more often.

A washable duvet like Plumelle was therefore developed from the start with regular washing as the starting point. A washable duvet should above all do what you buy it for: wash, dry and go back on the bed.
