Spinning your duvet: what does the spin speed mean?
02/10/2026
You want your washable duvet to dry easily again after washing. It helps to check the spin advice. Some duvets list 600 rpm. Others can be spun at 1200 rpm. What does that difference mean for care at home?
You want your washable duvet to dry easily again after washing. It helps to check the spin advice. Some duvets list 600 rpm. Others can be spun at 1200 rpm. What does that difference mean for care at home?

RPM means revolutions per minute

RPM stands for revolutions per minute. The number tells you how fast the drum turns during the spin cycle.

The spinning drum removes water from the duvet. At a higher spin speed, less moisture usually remains. The duvet is not dry yet after that. But less water has to evaporate in the air or in the dryer. That can shorten the drying time.

The filling has to withstand spinning too

During the spin cycle, the wet duvet is pressed against the drum. The filling is compressed. After washing and drying, it has to be able to expand again.

How well a filling recovers after pressure depends on the properties of the fibres and the way the filling is built. Keeping an even distribution also matters. You want the duvet to stay airy and the filling not to clump.

So it is not only about removing as much water as possible. The filling, the outer fabric, and the construction have to be suitable for the chosen spin speed.

What a low spin recommendation means

For some washable duvets, the manufacturer recommends a low spin speed. That can be needed to protect the filling, the outer fabric, or the construction. Not every duvet is suitable for spinning at a higher speed.

The strength of the seams also plays a part. If they cannot handle the load during washing and spinning, stitches can come loose or seams can be damaged. The care advice therefore has to fit the whole duvet.

There is a practical side as well. On the same duvet, spinning at 600 revolutions usually leaves more moisture than spinning at 1200 revolutions. Drying can then take longer.

Always follow the care advice for the duvet. A higher spin speed helps with drying when the product is suitable for it.

Use a suitable washing machine

A duvet has a lot of volume. It is normal to have to push it in a little when you fill the drum. Choose a washing machine with a suitable capacity for the size of your duvet. Follow the care advice and the instructions for your washing machine.

The machine can adjust the spin speed itself to how the laundry is distributed.

Spinning as part of the design

At Plumelle, regular washing is the starting point. Our washable duvets are designed for washing at 60 degrees and spinning at 1200 revolutions. The filling and the construction are built for that.

In short

Spinning your duvet helps remove water and makes drying easier. How high you can spin depends on the filling and the quality of the construction. They have to withstand the load of the chosen spin speed.
